BVNL MP Wybren van Haga has convinced Minister Kasja Ollongren (D66) not to grant rehabilitation to deserters, including Poncke Princen, who took up arms against the Dutch army during the police actions in Indonesia. Van Haga is satisfied with this decision, arguing that country traitors and war criminals do not deserve rehabilitation.
In 1948, Poncke Princen deserted from the Dutch police army and joined the Indonesian insurgents, where he fought against his own countrymen. Van Haga regrets that Princen was granted a visa to enter the Netherlands in 1995, calling it an insult to the Indonesian community.
In addition to his opposition to the rehabilitation of deserter Poncke Princen, Van Haga also filed a motion to rehabilitate General Spoor and Captain Westerling. He believes that these two soldiers are wrongly labeled war criminals. According to Van Haga, they put an end to the Bersiap period, during which large-scale genocide took place against (Indonesian) Dutch, Moluccans and Chinese. He emphasizes that the study of the violence of Dutch soldiers in the former Dutch East Indies is too one-sided and neglects the suffering caused by Indonesian insurgents.

To better understand the violence during the Bersiap period, Van Haga also submitted a motion to launch an in-depth investigation into the period. He finds it unacceptable that he believes the suffering caused by Indonesian insurgents remains under-reported.
