In an unexpected twist, Klaas Dijkhoff, former VVD parliamentary group chairman and former state secretary and minister, has announced that he will not be available as a possible successor to Mark Rutte. This revelation comes despite the fact that, according to a poll by EenVandaag, Dijkhoff is the second most popular possible candidate to replace Rutte after the fall of the fourth Rutte Cabinet.
"I have indicated before that this is not in my plans for the next 15 years," said Dijkhoff. "I made my choice not to be a full-time politician, because then I have to sacrifice everything. I find for me personally how I want to be a father, for example, is not compatible with the image I have of what a prime minister should deliver."
Dijkhoff, who is widely appreciated for his pragmatism and ability to explain complicated issues intelligibly, was the favorite among many VVD members. His popularity has risen further in the wake of the fall of the Rutte IV cabinet, leaving the country and the VVD with a power vacuum.
But Dijkhoff makes it clear that he prioritizes his personal life over the role of prime minister, a position that requires enormous dedication and sacrifice. In a political climate that puts increasing pressure on the personal lives of leaders, it is not surprising that some choose not to take this path.
Dijkhoff's refusal to make himself available as a possible successor to Rutte is a remarkable moment in the political history of the Netherlands. It raises questions about who the next leader will be, and whether they will be able to provide the stability and leadership the Netherlands needs at this crucial time.
There is now a clear call for leadership within the VVD. As the party considers its next steps, members will have to weigh who is best suited to take on the leadership. Dijkhoff's choice not to be available for the role increases the pressure on the remaining candidates.

Chances are that the VVD will now look at Vincent Karremans - party leader in Rotterdam - as well as Dilan Yesilgöz. The latter is now Minister of Security and Justice. However, the chance that she can make the VVD the biggest is about nil. Karremans may be able to do something for his party. But with Yesilgöz at the helm, the end of the era with the VVD as the largest party is really in sight.
