This "license plate coalition," which has already collaborated on exploring personalized license plates, shows that they understand the seriousness of the country's current financial situation. With a 17 billion euro hole to close, it is a sign of maturity and foresight not to rush into new spending that could further worsen the financial situation.
It is easy to promise and spend, but true leadership shows itself in times of constraints and difficult choices. By blocking costly initiatives during formation, these parties show that they are willing to think long-term and not just act for immediate political gain. This is an attitude one would expect from parties serious about taking on the responsibility of governing.
For example, while the PVV and BBB have not abandoned their respective positions on the deductible in health care and elder care, they recognize that such changes require careful planning and budgeting. The same goes for NSC and their position on compensation for the "unlucky generation" of students. By not making costly promises now, they avoid saddling future governments with insurmountable financial challenges.
