It should be clear that Geert Wilders' decision to withdraw "controversial bills" submitted in the past by the PVV is the result of the talks with BBB, NSC and BBB. This is clear from a tweet by Caroline van der Plas. That praises Wilders' decision and adds that she now wants to engage in deeper talks.
The parties involved have been maintaining radio silence about progress in the formation process for several weeks. Today, however, this suddenly came to an end. The PVV announced that Geert Wilders has withdrawn three bills from his own PVV - from years ago.
These are bills that are typically PVV's: on defining Islam as a "totalitarian ideology," banning Islamic expression and on excluding the right to vote on the basis of multiple nationality - as well as banning dual nationality "for certain office holders."
Caroline van der Plas is pleased
BBB leader Caroline van der Plas is very happy about this. On X, she let it be known that the withdrawal of the 3 bills "by Geert Wilders is a nice step forward and fits the promise he made earlier." By this she is referring to Wilders' statement that he wants to put controversial plans of the PVV on "ice."
"BBB hopes now," Van der Plas further, "together with the other parties, to be able to continue talking in the coming weeks about important dossiers, which are about the problems in the Netherlands."
Formation
Of course this means that the formation is continuing AND that progress is apparently so significant that Wilders thinks the time is right to make some real concessions. You don't do this if you're Wilders when you think the other parties are playing games with you. After all, if you withdraw these bills and then the talks collapse, you are just a fool. And submitting them again - afterwards - makes no sense. That is totally implausible.
Wilders knows that too. Therefore, it says a lot about the formation that he has taken this decision - no doubt as part of an agreement with the other parties involved, and especially with Pieter Omtzigt's NSC.
Weakness
Content-wise, the bills actually made no sense at all - at least in the sense that they a) would never be passed and b) are by no means constitutionally friendly. Well, not according to most experts.
On the other hand, it is also a sign of Wilders' weakness. For the PVV these were very important ideas. You don't just make an initiative bill like this in a jiffy. It's serious, hard work. Withdrawing this kind of proposal is a serious decision.

Therefore, you can also say that Wilders is in danger of surrendering with skin and hair to the possible coalition partners. The Dutch voted for the PVV because they hope that this party will do things differently; that Wilders will straighten his back and change The Hague.
He must be careful not to get into a situation where not The Hague, but he very much changes. A little bit of a different Wilders is good. Certainly. But a completely different Wilders, abandoning his old principles? No, that's not what the country needs. No one needs a PVV version of Mark Rutte.
Will that happen with Wilders? Possibly not! We should give him the benefit of the doubt anyway. But we must be careful that he does not sacrifice too much in exchange for the Torentje.
