Aggressive VVD spokesperson knocks microphone out of journalist's hands: Sophie Hermans says sorry

| by Michael van der Galien

"Who is worse off, the country or the VVD?" That's what a journalist asked Sophie Hermans, Mark Rutte's former bag-bearer and now VVD parliamentary group leader in the Lower House. It was an innocent question - and a good one, by the way - but Hermans and her spokesman Kees Berghuis did not appreciate it. They reacted irritably ... and eventually Berghuis even furiously snatched the microphone from the journalist. This under the motto: difficult questions should not be asked.

Today, footage crossed the Internet of Berghuis pulling the microphone out of the hands of a journalist from "Left Laser. Berghuis did this because the journalist was trying to ask some critical questions of his big boss, Sophie Hermans. One such question was, "Who is worse off, the country or the VVD."

An excellent question, but Berghuis and Hermans could not appreciate it. This was the result:

Berghuis not only grabbed the microphone, before that he aggressively ran into the reporter so he couldn't continue walking. Hermans was not there when he grabbed the microphone, but at the first move she was. She did and said nothing about it. What's more, she gave the journalist a beating for being disrespectful.

As if journalists should crawl up politicians' asses!

Excuse

Hypocritically, Hermans and her bag carrier came up with an apology after all. "Left Laser's style is not mine," Hermans tweeted hypocritically afterward. "Their treatment is unpleasant and their questions are often suggestive and rarely substantive. But that is allowed. I choose my own response to them."

"As for taking away the microphone, Kees shouldn't have done that."

Keesje then came out with a tweet of his own.

"Right," said the aggressor. "I shouldn't have done that. Apologies for that."

Declaration

Of course, that is not even close to adequate as a response. Accordingly, Left Laser has let it be known that deportation will be filed against Berghuis. "We draw a line here and are filing a report, it should not become a habit for 'liberals' to take away our microphone," the media organization said.

Left Laser is supported in this by the NVJ, the organization of, for and by journalists in the Netherlands. The journalist has also already contacted PersVeilig, the joint initiative of the NVJ, the Netherlands Society of Chief Editors, the police and the Public Prosecution Service.

In the Netherlands, there is increasing criticism of the way parties like the VVD deal with freedom of the press. ON! is banned, websites like DDS are ignored and opposed as much as possible, and initiatives like Blckbx and now Left Laser are treated improperly.
