Leon de Winter argues in his column in the Telegraph for a critical look at current developments in Europe and the role of the European Union (EU). According to De Winter, the EU now has the war it needs to forge European unity, albeit in a different way than we are used to. He highlights the consequences of NATO expansion, America's role and Russia's reaction.
Winter mentions that America seeks the globalization of the world and that Russia is seen as an obstacle to this. The expansion of NATO would be intended to weaken the dangers of a Russian-Chinese alliance. In this light, De Winter describes how a possible war with Ukraine was intended to entice Russia into a protracted war of attrition, in which Putin would fall into the trap. He points out that predictions were made that Russia would be in Kiev within 72 hours, and that these predictions sounded like invitations. Putin also believed in the rapid fall of Kiev, partly because of misinformation about the state of his armies.
Winter emphasizes that the EU now has a clean war, a war without ruins. He refers to the way the war has been "outsourced" to Ukraine, so that the fallen are not from European cities. He is critical of European unity, stating that it has so far existed only on paper. According to De Winter, the elites in Brussels know that nation-states are born in fire and bloodshed, and that it takes a brutal enemy to forge unity.
De Winter raises the question of what we, in Europe, actually are. He calls Putin a filthy villain, but also asks increasingly pressing questions about who we are in all this. His column gives a cynical view of the situation and calls for self-reflection.

Leon de Winter's column is an invitation to think critically about developments in Europe and the role of the EU. Although his words are cynical, they offer a perspective that encourages discussion and reflection. It is important to highlight various viewpoints and analyses to get a complete picture of the complex geopolitical situation we find ourselves in.
