Extinction Rebellion calls for making Keti Koti a national day of remembrance and celebration

| by Mark Jongeneel

Extinction Rebellion (XR) has once again caused a stir by calling for the recognition of July 1, Keti Koti, as a national day of remembrance and celebration. XR claims it is necessary to mark this day because the effects of the colonial past still live on in the form of racism and inequality.

What is worrying, however, is that XR is increasingly presenting itself as a radical group with a dangerous Marxist agenda. They seem not only concerned about the climate, but want to overthrow the entire system and make everyone collectively poor. They shun no means to achieve their goals and are unwilling to allow other views.

Therefore, XR's request to make Keti Koti a national day of remembrance and celebration seems more of a political move than a genuine recognition of the colonial past. It seems they want to exploit this sensitive issue to further their own agenda and further polarize society.

The idea of making Keti Koti a national day of remembrance and celebration seems primarily aimed at creating division and promoting a specific ideological agenda. XR claims to stand up for a better future, but their methods and views are highly problematic. It is unreasonable to demand that the government treat XR as a normal interlocutor when they are willing to cross corpses to achieve their goals. It is essential to have an open and constructive dialogue with various stakeholders, but extremist groups like XR cannot be taken seriously when they hold to a radical and one-sided view.

It is important to recognize the legacy of the colonial past and learn from the mistakes of the past. However, this cannot be achieved by enforcing an ideological agenda or imposing collective guilt on all of society. A national day of remembrance and celebration should be based on broad support and respect for different perspectives.
