The European Union's new asylum agreement has drawn the ire of Christine Teunissen, a prominent member of the Party for the Animals (PvdD). The agreement, which stipulates, among other things, that asylum seekers with little chance of obtaining a residence permit must wait for their application "at the EU's external borders" in an accelerated procedure, is intended to limit the influx of asylum seekers to countries such as the Netherlands.
Under this new policy, border countries such as Italy, Greece and Spain will receive financial support from the other EU countries to manage these expedited procedures. However, it is this approach to the asylum process that Teunissen described as "shameful.
Teunissen expressed strong words of disapproval of this policy. "Shameful agreement. Trapping families with children. Buying off solidarity," the PvdD MP said. She expressed concern about the possible cynicism behind this political decision, and concerns about the future impact of climate change on migration. Teunissen called for solidarity and addressing the root causes of mass migration.
However, this criticism comes at a time when asylum seekers' centers, such as the one in Ter Apel, are facing increasing nuisances, a problem that could potentially be exacerbated if the EU does not act. The new asylum agreement is an attempt by the EU to manage and reduce the flow of asylum seekers coming to member states.
For now, Teunissen remains an outspoken opponent of the new asylum agreement and continues to argue for a different approach. However, it remains unclear how these complex problems can be addressed without some compromise between the different interests and responsibilities of EU countries.

But perhaps this is not her goal at all, either. Because Deugers, of course, have the great goal of opening the borders wide and, above all, letting in as many people as possible - and preferably people from Africa and the Middle East.
