Geert Wilders furious over EU immigration deal: 'Netherlands commits cultural suicide'

Geert Wilders, the leader of the Party for Freedom (PVV), has expressed outrage over the European Union's (EU) recently adopted immigration agreement. According to Wilders, the agreement does not go far enough in limiting high immigration rates, something he sees as a key problem for the Netherlands.

Wilders spoke with strong language, calling the agreement an act of "cultural suicide" and arguing that the EU's current asylum arrangements and agreements with countries such as Tunisia are inadequate. Instead, the PVV leader advocates stricter measures, such as closing the Dutch borders to what he calls "fortune seekers and criminals."

Wilders also emphasized the absence of agreements on remigration in the agreement. He indicated that he believes that people who misbehave in the Netherlands should be sent away to improve security in the country and make the country "ours" again.

Wilders' criticism comes at a time when the Netherlands is struggling with high numbers of asylum seekers. According to statistics, sky-high asylum-seeker numbers have been recorded in recent years. The pressure of these numbers has led to disorder at large asylum seekers' centers (AZCs), such as the one in Ter Apel, where reports of nuisance and tensions between residents have become more frequent.

Interestingly, complained Christine Teunissen, member of the Lower House for the Party for the Animals, earlier today precisely that, in her view, the agreement is far too stringent. She finds it nothing short of "shameful" that immigration laws are actually going to be enforced and that the Netherlands has no intention of letting asylum seekers unrestricted in.
