The new agreement between European Union member states on the processing of asylum requests has attracted media attention. Generally, this news was received positively. However, with the influx of asylum seekers threatening to get completely out of control and the numbers rising to unprecedented levels, this agreement comes as mustard after the meal.
Prime Minister Rutte claims to aim for manageable numbers of asylum seekers, but can the new EU agreement actually achieve this goal? The answer is short and simple: no. Henk Kamp, an expert on asylum matters and also a prominent member of the VVD, recently explained what the ultimum remedium would be: adaptation or even cancellation of the UN Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights. According to Kamp, given the incorporation of these treaties into EU law, the EU will have to go along with these changes. If not, we will have to rethink our relationship with the EU. Prime Minister Rutte, however, is not so far along. In his weekly interview with NOS, he emphasized that we must stay within the framework of the treaties.
By the way, this does not mean that we should stop accepting refugees at all in the EU, including the Netherlands. What matters is that the numbers, as Prime Minister Rutte repeatedly emphasizes, are manageable.
In an ideal situation, we should be able to decide for ourselves how many refugees we take in and, as social scientist Ruud Koopmans suggests, even which refugees: "You can implement a very restrictive system like Denmark, but at the same time take in more genuine refugees, for example through UN resettlement programs," writes Hans Roodenburg in Wynia's Week.

It is essential to face reality. The new EU agreement will not significantly change the influx of asylum seekers. If we are truly committed to manageable numbers and careful selection of refugees, we must rethink our approach and not limit ourselves to treating symptoms. Let us look for solutions that respect the interests of both refugees and our societies, without losing sight of our borders and control.
