In a recent reversal of narrative, the mainstream media, including the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, have finally admitted that the so-called "successful" Ukrainian counteroffensive is not going as well as initially reported. This follows the revelation by the U.S. military think tank, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), that there is a likely "pause" in the Ukrainian offensive because of the need to review strategic and tactical aspects.
Colonel Margo Grosberg of Estonia's military intelligence service has confirmed that "we will not see any offensive movements in the next seven days." This news gives a new perspective on the situation on the ground, which until now has been characterized by a flood of reports of Ukrainian progress.
The Telegraph added that "operational pauses are a common feature of major offensive ventures and this pause does not mean the end of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, analysts say." A curious addition, because while operational pauses can be part of military operations, that obviously only happens when things don't go as desired. There are no "operational pauses" when everything is going smoothly, according to plan.
This raises questions about the role of media in reporting conflict. It is essential that news organizations take responsibility for reporting the facts as they are, without trying to influence public opinion or mitigate the situation. The idea that media should act as a propaganda channel to ensure "military support" for a particular country is not only unethical, but also undermines trust in reporting.

As the Ukrainian counteroffensive enters a crucial phase, it is important that the media closely follow the facts and developments without trying to push the public in a certain direction. It is up to the world to observe, learn and ultimately draw their own conclusions about the events unfolding on the world stage.
