Geert Wilders' great victory: a nightmare for the EU

The overwhelming victory of Geert Wilders and his PVV in the recent elections has caused unrest in Brussels. Wilders' Euroskeptic stance, combined with his advocacy of a Nexit, is seen as a "nightmare" for the European Union writes the Telegraph. However, this development is not isolated. There is a growing trend of right-wing, Euroskeptic movements in several EU member states, indicating that the winds of political change are blowing through Europe.

The PVV, now the largest party in the Netherlands, along with FVD, stands almost alone in its call for a Nexit. But for a more critical approach to the increasing power of the EU, Wilders may find allies in figures such as Pieter Omtzigt of the NSC and Caroline van der Plas of the BBB. This development puts the Netherlands at a crossroads at the upcoming crucial EU summit, where decisions on EU expansion, more money for Brussels and relaxing budget rules are on the agenda.

A major point of discussion will be how the Netherlands can use its veto power on these sensitive issues. The new House of Representatives will send outgoing Prime Minister Mark Rutte to Brussels with a message yet to be determined. This offers a unique opportunity to redefine the Dutch position in the EU.

At the same time, behind the scenes there is talk of a thorough reform of the EU. The EU summit is likely to decide that such a reform is necessary, especially if enlargement to include economically weaker countries such as Ukraine and Moldova is to go ahead. This provides an opportunity to rethink fundamental EU issues, including financial regulation, decision-making processes and the scope of EU power.

This situation highlights that the voice of the Netherlands in Europe is more important than ever. With the PVV at the helm, the Netherlands must now adopt a strategic position that considers both national interests and dynamics within the EU. With the PVV at the controls, the Netherlands must start fighting to preserve its veto power and thus its sovereignty.
