Fuel station owners are gearing up for a busy period, as excise taxes on fuels will be significantly increased on July 1. This increase will result in an increase in gasoline prices by as much as 17 cents per liter. Gas station operators are warning of possible queues on Thursday, June 29 and Friday, June 30. Some gas stations may even run out of fuel, so reports The Telegraph..
To deal with the expected rush, gas station owners are restocking their supplies. Additional drivers are even being deployed to ensure that tanks are filled. However, despite these efforts, Ewout Klok, representative of the gas station advocacy group, stresses that the available supplies may eventually run out as well. He therefore advises motorists to refuel earlier than just before July 1 to avoid long waiting times.
The excise tax rates for gasoline, diesel and LPG were reduced as recently as April 1 last year because of the energy crisis and the subsequent rise in fuel prices. However, now these cuts will be reversed in two steps: by July 1 and January 1, 2024. This means that the price of a liter of gasoline including VAT will increase by 16.7 cents. According to calculations by interest group United Consumers, a full tank of gasoline will become on average 10 euros more expensive, while diesel drivers will have to pay about 7 euros more.
The ANWB calls this price increase after last year's reduction "incomprehensible." In fact, its own research shows that a quarter of Dutch motorists experienced financial difficulties in 2022 due to fuel price increases. Many people have no choice but to use the car to go to work, making them especially vulnerable to such price increases. The ANWB therefore fears that a significant number of motorists will again run into problems due to the excise tax increase.
