In a recent article by The Washington Post reveals that the U.S. intelligence agency CIA was aware of the explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipelines was aware of a plot by the Ukrainian military to carry out a covert attack on the undersea network. According to the newspaper, the CIA received a tip from an unnamed European intelligence service, which reported that six members of the Ukrainian special units had plans to blow up the pipelines connecting Russia to Germany to blow up. The report, which eventually came into the hands of The Washington Post via a member of the Air National Guard on the chat platform Discord, shed new light on the events surrounding the explosions.
Although The Washington Post, at the request of government officials, does not disclose the country to which the European intelligence agency belongs, the report was based on information obtained from an individual in Ukraine. Although the information from this source could not immediately be confirmed, the CIA shared shared the report with Germany and other European countries as early as last June. The explosions, however, did not take place until three months later.
According to the report, there would be specific evidence linking the government in Kiev with a possible attack in the Baltic Sea. Following the discovery of the gas leaks on Sept. 26, 2022, American and Western officials spoke about a brazen act of sabotage against Europe's energy infrastructure. Three underwater explosions caused significant leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, but one gas link in the network was spared.
Both Ukraine as well as the White House and the CIA declined to comment on The Washington Post's article. The Ukrainian government has always denied any involvement in the Nord Stream attack, while officials of U.S. President Joe Biden's administration have previously identified Russia as a suspect. Russia, however, has consistently denied. The revelations in this article raise new questions about the events surrounding the attack on Nord Stream. With the CIA having been known about the Ukrainian plot months in advance, the question arises as to why no measures were taken to prevent the attack.
